Desert Festival
Held in the months of January-February, the Desert Festival is organized in Jaisalmer,
Rajasthan with delightful spirit. The barren land of Jaisalmer comes to life for three days
(duration of festival) and it comes to an end on Poornima, the full moon day. The main
reason of the Rajasthan Desert Festival is to exhibit the rich and colorful culture of the
royal state clustered with hordes of desert areas. For three days, colorfully dressed people
of Rajasthan dance to the tunes lingering ballads of heroism, romance and tragedy of the
local heroes.
During the festival, Jaisalmer gets a chance to parade its enthusiastic charm to the world
through various attractive activities that include snake charmers, puppeteers, acrobats,
folk performers, etc. Specially, the Gair and Fire dancers, in their vivacious and colorful
costumes, capture your sensitivity. However, amongst all these, camel- the ship of the
desert always have special place during this festivals. Apart from the camel rides, a
number of events of camel performances such as camel races, camel dances, and the
bumpy, neck shaking camel rides are performed. Among all of them, the most famous
and unique ones are camel polo and camel dance.
One more interesting event is the turban tying rivalry that displays of the most wonderful
moustaches. Turbans and mustaches are supposed to be the symbols of reputation in the
state of Rajasthan. Other appealing event is a Mr. Desert competition that further adds to
the enjoyment. With the mesmerizing Jaisalmer Fort and the sand dunes serving as the
background, the merriment gains an added advantage. There are also some other dazzling
performances by the folk artists, dancing pleasingly to the tunes of the folk music. You
can also enjoy trading of traditional handicrafts of Rajasthan at the fair. All arrangements
