Nagaur Fair
Nagaur is one of the most scenic Rajput towns located between Jodhpur and Bikaner,
where the second largest cattle fair of Rajasthan is celebrated. Nagaur Fair which is also
known as Ramdeoji Cattle fair, is the effort of great Jodhpur family king Mr. Umed
Singh, which he started in tribute of Sh. Ramdeoji 56 years back and since then it has
been celebrated regularly in Nagaur. The fair is primarily known for cattle trading, which
takes place expansively at the fair. The Rajasthan Nagaur Cattle Fair is organized in the
Hindu month of Magha (Jan-Feb) and is celebrated for eight consecutive days. The fair is
well-known for trading in cows, bullocks, camels and horses where approximately 70,000
bullocks, camels and horses are sold every year. The bullocks of Nagaur are famous for
their strength and magnetize a large number of buyers.
To make the festival more colorful, the owners of these cattle wear colorful turbans and
flaunting long moustaches and to make their cattle attractive, the animals are adorned
with various trimmings in an overgenerous manner. Both the owners and buyers bargain
for the best deal. Besides the cattle trading, there are numerous other attractions at the
fair as you can find things that are of routine use even from needles to nails are available
in these events. At the Nagaur fair, the biggest Mirchi (red chili) Bazaar of India is
organized. You can also purchase some other items at the fair include wooden items,
iron-crafts, camel leather accessories, etc. The appealing sight of people dressed in
gorgeous clothes and participating locals and tourists in sports is worth capturing with
camera.
Entire attractions of the fair are full of fun and pleasure and it also offers some enjoyment
to those wanting to have entertainment. Several sports arrangements are organized at
the fair such as tug-of-war, camel races, bullock races and cockfights. In addition to
these sports, other form of entertainment which are performed are- jugglers, puppeteers,
storytellers, and campfire evenings, adding to the thrill of the tourists. It catches the
attention of visitors from all over the world. Fairs witness strong social synchronization
and are seen as the true face of rustic rural Rajasthan.
